I am a little dog and what do I know about politics? But it is sad to witness all that have been happening in Hong Kong in the last few months. As the Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, we will see the moon at its biggest and brightest. The full moon has always been a symbol of togetherness, unity and harmony. I plead everyone to step back a little and take a more conciliatory stand to resolve differences.

Coming back to our business, I would highlight sweet wines this time not only because they are good complement to the moon cake, I also want them to bring sweetness to everyone during this time of tremendous challenges. As most of you know well about Sauternes, I would therefore focus on introducing things from the other regions:

1989 Huet Le Mont Moelleux Premiere Trie (WA99) at $1,100 per bottle – From Loire and out of the Chenin Blanc grape varietal, this is luminous yellow in colour and with an aristocratic bouquet, delicate yet intense, possessing a concentrated fruit aroma with an elegant palate of sweet peach and an endless finish. Drink it now or keep effortlessly for another 25 years.

2015 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaumes (WS98) at $380per half bottle – Also from Loire, this wine gives waves of golden apple, melon, mango and white peach…sweet and yet invigorating, with an inner brightness that matches the outward hedonism.

2005 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnennuhr Beerenauslese (WA98) at $850 per half bottle – This smells intensely honeyed, with nut paste, fruit jelly, citrus oils and a hint of molasses, all with clarity, purity and freshness too. Some of the German sweet Rieslings at the Trockenbeerenauslese level are now the most expensive white wine in the World, assuming you can find them. Why not try one from the next level to get a flavour of what it can be?

2015 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance (TA98) at $430 per 500 ml bottle – How does this sound? Vin de Constance was the favourite of Napoleon, Frederick the Great and Charles Dickens. Jane Austen recommended having it to mend the broken heart. Made mostly from the Muscat grape type, there is sweetness of course, but also with enough acidity to keep it fresh. There are rich floral notes with hints of apricot and marmalade too. To us, it gives the Ch. d’Yquem a real run for their money!!!

2006 Sine Qua Non Mr. K Nobleman x 2 (RP95) + Mr. Strawman x 1 (RP97) at $2,500 per set of 3 half bottles in OWC – Iconic California producer famous especially for its Shiraz and Grenache but also this extraordinary sweet wine as a joint project with the famed Austrian Alois Kracher (i.e. Mr. K). The wine exhibits a gold colour, revealing marmalade, maple syrup and exotic tropical fruits. Already very good now, some think that it can be kept forever!!!
