A Letter to Ourselves

Dear Vinopolis,

Birthday greetings as you are approaching the 4th anniversary of operation!!!

It is heartening to see that you have survived amidst the economic adversities caused first by the social unrest and then the prolonged pandemic situation which hasn’t quite ended yet. A dedication to service is probably what has taken you through the challenges.

You are young and small. I know customers are pointing out shortcomings and giving many suggestions. You feel apologetic at times as not all can be entertained and implemented right away. Continuous improvement is more a journey than instant rectifications. Central to any business philosophy though must be the desire to always provide value to customers.

I want to thank you for offering me more than a pastime after my first career of close to 40 years. You have given me incentive to learn, opportunities to serve, excuses to meet people and making more friends, all of which are meaningful and enjoyable. Let’s keep going together. There will be more and better to come, I am sure.

Yours sincerely.

KLL, Owner/Operator

Now back to wines which we would like to recommend the following from our latest additions:

Henri Giraud MV16 Fut de Chene (VN97 at HK$1,180/bottle) – A Champagne of towering presence and one which must not be slighted because it is NV. Apricot, tangerine oil, cinnamon, chamomile and dried flowers all meld together to give it a creamy and rich texture. Pure class and undeniably alluring!!!

2020 Verget Pouilly-Fuisse les Combes VV (VN95 at HK$330/bottle) – This delightful and great valued white Burgundy got snapped up in no time the last two occasions we carried it. New inventory has just come in and anybody interested should act fast. It will be such a good drink as the summer heat is gaining pace.

2015 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese*** WK (WA97 at HK$650/bottle) – This is a deep and complex German dry Riesling at the very high echelon of quality. There are precise aromas of ripe fruit intermixed with crushed stones, bones and a little smoke. The palate is silky, juicy, generous and powerful but at the same time elegant.

2013 Domaine Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 375 ml (WA94 at HK$660/half-bottle) – It is never easy to find a good Burgundy in half-bottle size. This Grand Cru by a popular house has plenty of redcurrant and cranberry fruit, hints of lavender and cassis. The palate is medium bodied and with a good backbone of fine tannin leading to a complex, spice-tinged and persistent finish.

2011 Henri Boillot Chambertin Grand Cru (VN95 at HK$2,500/bottle) – This Burgundy red hits one’s palate with remarkable balance and depth. Dark red stone fruits, wild flowers and spices are some of the many notes that keep flowing into a finish that is silky and utterly dazzling. And we challenge anyone to find another Chambertin Grand Cru at such reasonable price level these days…

2013 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 1.5L (WA96 at HK$1,150/magnum) – This Italian house is on a roll as it has offered some very impressive wines in the last 10-15 years, with this one showing a beautifully exuberant but elegant bouquet of fruit and spice. The wine is powerful but never overdone as it delivers depth with a silky persistence and a long finish.

2014 L'Aventure Estate Red (WA98 at HK$780/bottle) – From the Central Coast of California, this is a massive, gorgeously rich blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Verdot in 50/35/15 proportion. The aromas of cassis, toasted spice, graphite and damp earth almost overshadow the fruits. It is thick, full-bodied, unctuous and palate-saturating!!!

2018 Donum Three Hills Pinot Noir (WE95 at HK$720/bottle) – Last but certainly not least, there is this new offering from the Donum Estate for which we are their exclusive representative in Hong Kong. The Three Hills plot is in an area that is cooler in its sub-climate with late ripening fruits. The resulted wine is delicate and focuses more on elegance rather than strength. There are plenty of fresh cherry, cranberry and raspberry. Elegant and refined, it is gorgeous now but will gain even more depth and complexity in 5-8 years.
